0.0. Само слово «айнур» исчерпывающе разъясняется в HME 11/4: так называется вся категория («порядок») духов, к которой принадлежат майар и валар, созданная до Эа (Мира). Значение «святой, священный» это слово приобрело только в квэнья (Ainu 'one of the "order" of the Valar and Maiar, made before Ea'. Valarin ayanuz. It was from this ainu that in Quenya was made the adjective aina 'holy', since according to Quenya derivation ainu appeared to be a personal form of such an adjective).
Следует иметь в виду, что в рамках представлений, отраженных в корпусе Толкиена _все_ живые существа были созданы только Илуватаром* и что до сотворения материального мира (и вне этого мира) все они могли быть только чистыми «духами». Таким образом, встречая здесь и ниже определение «айнур» как «духов, созданных Илуватаром до начала Эа», мы можем смело считать синономичным ему определение: «все живые существа, существовавшие до сотворения Эа и способные существовать вне Эа».
*Бессмысленно задаваться вопросом о том, создал ли их всех Илуватар «на самом деле», «в реальности Арды»: так это или нет, в наших источниках всякое живое существо будет рассматриваться как создание Илуватара уже в силу того, что оно живое.
Таким образом, до «сотворения» Эа никого, кроме Эру и айнур не существовало в принципе.

0.1. В письме 211 (1958) Толкиен пишет: «The Valar or 'powers, rulers' were the first 'creation': rational spirits or minds without incarnation, created before the physical world. (Strictly these spirits were called Ainur, the Valar being only those from among them who entered the world after its making, and the name is properly applied only to the great among them, who take the imaginative but not the theological place of 'gods'.) The Ainur took part in the making of the world as 'sub-creators': in various degrees, after this fashion» (Валар, или «Могущества, Владыки», были первым творением: разумные духи или умы без воплощения, созданные еще до сотворения физического мира; строго говоря, [все] такие духи именовались «айнур», валарами были лишь те из них [«айнур»], кто вошел в мир после его сотворения, и название [«валар»] правильно применять лишь к сильнейшим среди них [=сошедших], занявшим в воображении, но не в теологии, место «богов» (...)).
Заметим, что отсюда видно существование _двух_ смыслов термина «валар»: «не (вполне) правильное = все духи-айнур, сошедшие в Эа», и «(вполне) правильное = сильнейшие из духов-айнур, сошедших в Эа».

В черновом продолжении к этому письму Толкиен повторяет: «Many of the Ainur did enter into it [History = creation, «Ea», где течет время, в отличие от внешней пустоты Void, где находится Эру, и где нет времени], and must bide in it till the End, being involved in Time, the series of events that complete it. Заметим, что здесь валарами называются _все_ айнур, спустившиеся в Эа (Thus it came to pass that of the Ainur some abode still with Iluvatar beyond the confines of the World; but others, and among them many of the greatest and most fair, took the leave of Iluvatar and descended into it. But this condition Iluvatar made, or it is the necessity of their love, that their power should thenceforward be contained and bounded in the World, to be within it for ever, until it is complete, so that they are its life and it is theirs. Оставшиеся вне Эа айнур выделяются Пенголодом в Осанве-квенте в отдельную группу «Айнур-в-присутствии-Эру», отличную и от валар, и от майар (как обитателей Эа): All these things, says Pengolodh, are true of all minds, from the Ainur in the presence of Eru, or the great Valar such as Manwe and Melkor, to the Maiar in Eа, and down to the least of the Mirrоanwi (инкарнатов).

Then those of the Ainur who desired it arose and entered into the World at the beginning of Time; and it was their task to achieve it, and by their labours to fulfil the vision which they had seen. Long they laboured in the regions of Ea, which are vast beyond the thought of Elves and Men, until in the time appointed was made Arda, the Kingdom of Earth. Then they put on the raiment of Earth and descended into it, and dwelt therein. - Of the Valar. The Great among these spirits the Elves name the Valar, the Powers of Arda, and Men have often called them gods. The Lords of the Valar are seven; and the Valier, the Queens of the Valar, are seven also).
