Как видим, «меньшие духи» делятся здесь на две категории: «дети» валар и «существа той же разновидности», что и валар; те и другие покрываются термином «Валаринди».
В староанглийской версии ранних «Анналов Валинора» тех же «меньших духов» называют не Валаринди, а «Ванимор», а «Дети Валар» по-прежнему остаются лишь одной из категорий в составе этих меньших духов/ванимор (HME 4/6. 0.5.4. Первые упоминания «майар» у Толкиена.
В первой редакции «Анналоы Амана» сохраняется классификация 0.5.3. с заменой слова «Ванимор» на слово «Майар» (первый вариант: «Майри»), причем этому слову придан тот же перевод, что и слову «Ванимор» («прекрасные»); к этим «майар» в первой редакции «Анналов Амана» причислены в качестве субкатегории и «Валаринди, отпрыски валар» (HME 10/2. Первая редакция, Aam §4 With these great powers came many other spirits of like kind but less might and authority; these are the Maiar, the Beautiful, the folk of the Valar. And with them are numbered also the Valarindi, the offspring of the Valar, their children begotten in Arda, yet of the race of the Ainur who were before the World; they are many and fair).

They are the elder children of the World; and though their being began within Ea, yet they are of the race of the Ainur, who were before the world, and they have power and rank below that of the Valar only.

Как видим, в первой редакции «Анналов Амана» слово «майар» служит для описания разом второй и третьей категорий уже знакомой нам трехчленной классификации духов, спустившихся в Эа (ванимор включая валаринди/детей валар) (= стадия 1). Во второй же и в конечной редакции «Анналов Амана» слово «майар» употребляется как обозначение какой-то группы меньших, нежели валар, духов, _отличной_ от валаринди/детей валар - другой группы таких духов (= стадия 2). При этом Мелиан, Оссэ и Саурон в «Анналах Амана» значатся «майар», как и в более поздних версиях, включая канонический «Сильмариллион».
Возникает вопрос: «по горизонтали» проведено это разграничение «майар» и «детей валар» на стадии 2, или «по вертикали»? В первом случае получилось бы, что на стадии 2 _вторая категория духов_ была разделена Толкиеном на «детей валар» и «майар» (вариант 1). Во втором случае - что на стадии 2 термин «дети валар» был закреплен Толкиеном за второй категорией духов, а термин «майар» - за третьей (вариант 2). Выбор между этими вариантами будет произведен ниже.

0.5.5. Наконец, в позднем «Сильмариллионе» и в каноническом «Сильмариллионе»-1977 (в «Валаквенте») вводится понятие «майар» уже без упоминания «детей валар»; здесь «майарами» называют неких (не всех, см. п.0.5.6!) духов, пришедших в Мир вместе с валар, «той же категории (что и валар), но меньших степеней» (ср. с «их собственного вида» и пр. выше). HME 10/3 The Later Quenta Silmarillion [§10 b] [All the following was added to the typescript in ink: With the Valar were other spirits whose being also began before the world: these are the maiar, of the same order as the Great but of less might and majesty. Among them Eonwe the herald of Manwe, and Ilmare handmaid of Varda were the chief. Many others there are who have no names among Elves or Men, for they appear seldom in forms visible. But great and fair was Melian of the people of Yavanna. (...) Comm. к 10b: Fionwe and Ilmare were removed from §4 as the children of Manwe and Varda, and in §7 Fionwe becomes Eonwe, 'herald of Manwe'; here Ilmare becomes 'handmaid of Varda'. This is an aspect of an important development in the conception of the Powers of Arda, the abandonment of the old and long-rooted idea of 'the Children of the Valar, the Sons of the Valar'. It was still present in AAm (p. 49, §4), where the Valarindi, 'the offspring of the Valar', were 'numbered with' the Maiar (but in AAm* they are distinguished from the Maiar, p. 66, §4). On the typescript text of AAm the conception of the Children of theValar was struck out (see under §6 above). Melian is a Maia (as in AAm §40), and she is 'of the people of Yavanna' (in QS §31 'she was akin, before the World was made, unto Yavanna').
