Вот небольшая и очень сдержанная рецензия от Дэвида Дагана:

История Средиземья: Устроение Средиземья

The “Elsewhere” collective is working its way gradually through the complex task of translating all twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth. They have now reached Volume 4, “The Shaping of Middle-earth”.

This presents very different problems from the first three volumes. The two volumes of the Book of Lost Tales and the verse narrations of the Lays of Beleriand, although definitely draft material with changes, editorial interventions and many annotations, still represent coherent narratives. This is much less the case with the Shaping of Middle-earth. Volume 4 is, to put it uncharitably, more of a ragbag. The core is Tolkien’s earliest attempts to put together the single text of what we would recognise as the Silmarillion – drafts struggling to become a narration, but in fact appearing more like extensive annotations, and draft schemes for further action, mainly in the form of annals. There are also very early very rough maps, or rather diagrams, of evolving Arda.

In all, this is a volume for really dedicated students of Tolkien’s developing conception of his Legendarium, and one that present particular challenges for the translating team. Fortunately, we know already that we can rely on them for accuracy and scholarship; here they are especially helpful with notes on the transliteration and pronunciation of Elvish names. Just to reassure general readers; despite its title, this volume is the most shapeless of the History of Middle-earth and the heaviest going. The next volume (The Lost Road) will give translators and readers alike more solid material. Still, volume 4 contains much useful and interesting information that will be appreciated by serious students.
